The Truth Is…

October 26th, 2006

An Inconvenient Truth was a popular movie earlier this year. I haven’t seen it but I believe the truth is often inconvenient. It invades our comfort zone and creeps in under our subsequent feelings of indignation. It is often easier to ignore the truth, and with the truth, the reality of the world we live in.

Here is a tame example. Today it would be more convenient to stay home after work to cook a moderately healthy dinner and do some light housework than it would to clean up and change clothes to go out for a yoga class after coming home from work. Once I’m home, it’s more convenient to just stay there. Any errands, chores, appointments, etc. must happen en route to or from work otherwise it just never happens at all. However, the truth is that attending the yoga class is many times more beneficial to my body and soul than the moderately healthy meal and a slightly less messy apartment. Additionally, yoga is one of those things for which I will be reaping benefits days after the class is over.

A more extreme example is my car. Driving to and from work daily during the week in my own, personal, encapsulated, insulated world is most comfortable and convenient. However, the truth is this form of transportation is costly and wasteful but the alternatives are most inconvenient: public transportation leaves a 1.5 mile gap at the office-end of the route; carpooling requires a massive coordination effort with three other people; riding a bicycle would leave me a sweaty, wilted mess by the time I arrive at the office; and walking is not an option.
